Sometimes all you feel
bursts open
love, hate, longing
all tangled, rips apart
like the pull of cotton candy
flesh and blood
imperfection
skin flushed pink—
anticipate the slap
before the crash
before the flinch
in life
destined to despise
love each brutal second
would not surrender
even if you knew how
then a kiss
like you’ve been conquered
(but you know better)
holds you and you let it
in your sober, sorry state
and you wonder if this isn’t
a very good thing.
